Single Review: Brinken by Rauli V

Review by Sarah Ruiz

"Brinken," the latest single from Dominican rock artist Rauli V, resonates deeply with themes of loyalty and betrayal within one's inner circle. The single is an ode to his Dominican heritage and upbringing while tackling an experience some people go through.

Based in Maryland, Rauli V infuses Rock and Urban Latin influences to offer listeners a fresh perspective on Dominican music. His blend of rhythms, sounds, lyrics and flow creates a unique representation of what a Dominican artist can be and sound like in this genre by setting him apart in his own lane.

During a trip to the Dominican Republic, inspiration for this song struck Rauli V while listening to Deftones/Korn CDs and old Playero mixtapes in his truck. He recalls the phrase "Brinquen" from Playero, which ignited the lyrical flow that made him immediately start composing this song. Upon returning to the U.S. he joined forces with John Love (Artist/ Musician) and Eric Taft (Grammy nominated engineer and producer) to complete the single.

Through Dominican slang and emotive melodies, the lyrics also express the importance of finding one's tribe and celebrating genuine connections, while also calling out those who feign support. As the guitar crescendos towards the chorus, the mantra of feeling the confidence to go after your wildest dreams and not being afraid but to “Jump” which is the English translation of “Brinken.” The melodies perfectly align to evoke this inspiring message for everyone listening.

Rauli V shares the song is for those who “have been fake all along, trying to get close to your group like a snake in the grass.” He wants listeners to feel they have found their circle and their home.

One of the verses emphasizes always feeling humble and acknowledging the people who never believed in you. Rauli V shares, “Como bien Dominicano, con la carta que me dieron voy a resolver y cuando no se que hacer tengo mi Coro ready pa lo que sea,” which translates to "Like a good Dominican, with the card they gave me, I'll manage, and when I don't know what to do, I have my crew ready for anything."

There are more creative works for the future for Rauli V this year. He will soon be debuting his next EP, “No Somos Iguales.” Make sure you stay up to date with him on instagram and stream “Brinken” here!
