Single Review: Shakes by Luke Hemmings

Review by Zuzu Khalil

Luke Hemmings, Australian singer-songwriter and frontman of 5 Seconds of Summer, has once again graced the music scene with his musical prowess in his latest release, “Shakes.” This marks the beginning of a new era for Hemmings as he continues to share his own journey navigating through life in the public eye. “Shakes” gives us a glimpse of what Hemmings has in store for us as it showcases a mature and refined sound that demonstrates his evolution as an artist.

Hemmings establishes a dreamy atmosphere right at the start of “Shakes,” immediately drawing you in. His vocals, as always, are a standout feature, delivering the raw emotion and vulnerability that have become synonymous with his musical style. The haunting quality of his voice adds a layer of openness, luring the listener into the heart of the narrative.

The track’s production is a standout element, with a carefully crafted blend of atmospheric instrumentation and subtle electronic elements. The incorporation of delicate harmonies and well-placed percussion enhances the overall texture of the song, adding a depth to its emotional resonance and allowing the lyrics take center stage as they weave a narrative of the uncertainties of love and the rollercoaster of emotions that accompany it.

Lyrically, “Shakes” explores the complexities of romantic relationships, touching on themes of doubt, longing, and the universal struggle of self-identity. Hemmings’ poetic prowess shines as he weaves a tale of introspection and poignancy through lyrics that invite listeners to reflect on their own experiences, creating a sense of universality that resonates on a personal level. Each verse is a window into the artist’s soul, further heightening the emotional depth of the song.

The verses portray a kind of stillness that then builds into a cinematic chorus where Hemmings’ vocals soar. The emotional intensity is palpable, leaving a lasting impact that lingers even after the song ends. The juxtaposition of the more stripped-down verses with the fuller, anthemic chorus creates a dynamic musical journey, mirroring the highs and lows of love. “Shakes” is a testament to Hemmings’ attention to detail and subtle nuances.  The combination of heartfelt lyrics and a powerful vocal delivery showcases Hemmings’ growth as an artist, making “Shakes” a standout piece in his discography.

“Shakes” is not just a song: it’s a sonic exploration of the human experience. Luke Hemmings has once again proven his ability to craft music that transcends boundaries and resonates with the human soul. While “Shakes” signals the conclusion of the “When Facing the Things We Turn Away From” era, Hemmings’ inaugural solo record, it undeniably serves as an introduction to the unfolding chapters in his musical journey.

With “Shakes” dropping and Luke Hemmings spilling the beans about his upcoming EP, “Boy,” set to drop on April 26th, we are super stoked to see what he has in store for us! Make sure to stream “Shakes” here and keep an eye out for his new EP!
