Review: Let Me Down Easy (Lie) by Why Don’t We

Rock-pop boyband Why Don’t We have made a strong comeback with “Let Me Down Easy (Lie).” This drops a few months after their single 2021 “Love Back,” and touches on similar topics of heartbreak and the relationship coming to a close. The band teased a new single for a while and announced “Let Me Down Easy (Lie)” after they, unfortunately, had to postpone ticket sales for their upcoming tour.

I know sometimes you get pissed off / I know you can't stand it when / I canceled plans, I brushed you off / Yeah, we never planned it, yeah. Zach Herron takes the lead in the first verse and describes the red flags that have been going on throughout the process. When starting off in a relationship, there tend to be ups and downs, but if there’s more disagreeing than anything it’s time to have a talk.

If you wake up one day and don't feel the same / Would you still smile when the feeling fades? / Look to the side when I'm saying your name / Say it's all fine, baby, lie to my face / Who am I to make you stay? / Baby, let me down easy. Daniel Seavy sings in the chorus and reflects on the what-ifs coming close to the end of the relationship and if the connection is still intact after. The soft tone in Daniel’s voice mirrors his emotions and the anticipated thought in the back of his mind. He is telling his partner that they aren’t forcing them to stay and wants to tell them the disappointing news in a proper manner.

This new single reflects on the difficult parts of being in a relationship. The band does an excellent job on describing those hard emotions. With “Love Back” and this new track, we can tell the direction that they want to follow. The new high energy sound combined with disheartening emotions evokes a new era of Why Don’t We, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.
