Single Review: Marathon by Alex Slay

Review by Georgia Phillips

Covid-19 has hit the music industry with such a great force, many music venues were forced to shut down and musicians were required to put their careers on hold for at least a good year and a half before being able to get back on their feet and get back in front of crowds. Just before the heights of Coronavirus, R&B artist Alex Slay decided to make the rather confident move from a small town in Florida, to Music City USA - Nashville, where he continued to build up his blossoming career. Even though Nashville is mainly known for its hospitality to new and upcoming country artists, Slay makes it clear that he is solely focused on the R&B scene flourishing just off the Music Row.

Alex Slay has just recently released a new single name of ‘Marathon’, which is a stellar offering to the scene. ‘Marathon’ kicks off with lazy yet somehow bouncy electric guitar chords followed by a soft beat drop.

‘Welcome to the marathon, shit don’t ever stop. It goes on and on and on’

Slay’s silky voice is introduced with a gentle jingle of chimes. The only way I can explain all of this is coming together - is velvet. It sounds like the feel of velvet. Soft, silky, smooth, but not too much all at once. It’s a perfect balance between the instruments and Slay’s vocals, it blends rather well. The song continues with its beat, elements of punchy synths started to be added into the mix, along with subtle sounds of a brass instrument. If you’re a fan of Silk Sonic, I highly recommend you listen to Alex Slay- Marathon.
